MESA, Arizona — A Florida teen who was supposed to spend his vacation on a cruise ship in France has died in a plane crash on the same trip.
Thomas J. Smith was 17 when he crashed in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Spain, killing all six passengers on board.
He was from the city of MESA in northwest Florida.
Smith was the second child of three siblings and the third of five.
He said he loved to sail and loved being with his friends, but also missed his family and had no idea why he took the trip.
His family told ABC News they believe his father is still alive, but that he may not be with them right now.
He had no siblings, so his mother and younger sister were left to raise the kids alone.
